Glossary:

Autonomic Nervous System: Part of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that regulates involuntary physiologic processes such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and respiration. 

 

5-HT2A Receptor: Found in the hypothalamus, 5-HT2A receptors increase hormone levels of oxytocin, prolactin, ACTH, corticosterone, and renin. When activated, these receptors can lead to increased perception, cognition, and mood. They also help promote cortical structure and functional neuroplasticity when activated. 

Breathwork: A calming strategy used to help relax the body, decrease stress, and increase mindfulness. With a constant rhythm and regular flow of oxygen, cells are renewed and anxiety lowers.

 

Default Mode Network (DMN): DMN is a group of brain regions activated when a person is not focused on the outside world. Instead, the person is active internally processing concepts such as introspection and self-directed thought allowing the person to deeply connect with themselves and their inner spirit.

 

Dopamine: A neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, reward, and motivation.

Embodiment: The experience of having or being aware of one's physical body and its sensations.

Empathogen: A substance that produces feelings of empathy, connectedness, and emotional openness.

Entheogen: a sacred medicine, usually of a plant origin, to produce heightened states of consciousness for spiritual purposes. Sometimes referred to as plant medicines or psychedelics.

 

Gold Star Families: Family members who have lost their loved one – a veteran – in active duty.

 

White Star Families: Family members who have lost their loved one – a veteran – to suicide.

 

Set and Setting: The psychological state (set) and physical/social environment (setting) that influence a person's experience, particularly with psychoactive substances.

Psychedelic: A class of substances that can induce non-ordinary states of consciousness, often characterized by altered perceptions, emotions, and cognitive processes. The term literally means "mind-manifesting."

Psilocin (4-HO-DMT): The active metabolite of psilocybin, responsible for the psychoactive effects of psilocybin. It acts primarily on serotonin receptors in the brain.

Psilocybin: A naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms. When ingested, it is converted to psilocin in the body, producing altered states of consciousness.

Entheogenic Guide / Care Team: Trained individuals who provide support and guidance during entheogenic experiences, ensuring safety and facilitating personal growth and healing.

 

Harm Reduction: Strategies aimed at minimizing negative consequences associated with substance use or other potentially risky behaviors.

 

Huachuma: Also known as San Pedro, a cactus native to the Andes containing mescaline, traditionally used in shamanic practices for healing and spiritual purposes.

Iboga: A shrub native to West Africa whose root bark contains ibogaine, a powerful psychoactive compound used in traditional spiritual practices and, more recently, in addiction treatment.

Integration: The process of incorporating insights or experiences, often from altered states of consciousness, into one's daily life and worldview.

Intention: A predetermined purpose or goal set before engaging in an experience, often used in the context of psychedelic or spiritual practices.

Bufo Alvarius / 5-MeO-DMT (5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine): A potent, fast-acting psychedelic compound found in the secretions of the Bufo Alvarius toad. It produces intense and brief altered states of consciousness.

Magic Mushrooms: See psilocybin. Refers to various species of fungi containing psilocybin and psilocin, which produce psychedelic effects when consumed.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine): A synthetic compound with both stimulant and empathogenic properties, often referred to as "ecstasy" or "molly." It's being researched for potential therapeutic uses, particularly in treating PTSD.

Mescaline: A naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid found in several cacti species, including peyote and San Pedro. It produces altered states of consciousness characterized by visual hallucinations and introspective experiences.

Microdosing: The practice of taking very small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelic substances on a regular schedule, purportedly to enhance creativity, productivity, and well-being without inducing a full psychedelic experience.

Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to form new neural connections and reorganize itself throughout life.

Neurotransmitter: A chemical messenger that transmits signals between neurons in the brain.

Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA): A 1993 United States federal law that aims to prevent laws that substantially burden a person's free exercise of religion.

Sanctuary: A safe and protected space, often used in the context of providing a secure environment for spiritual or therapeutic experiences.

Serotonin: A neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood regulation, sleep, appetite, and other bodily functions.

Somatic: Relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind.

SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor): A class of antidepressant medications that increase serotonin levels in the brain by blocking its reabsorption.

Sympathetic Nervous System: Part of the autonomic nervous system that activates the "fight or flight" response during stress or excitement.
